Review of The Con - Tegan & Sara

The Con - Tegan & Sara

This has been a slow grower. My initial reaction to the album was disappointment. I wanted to like them but on the strength of their music, not because of a misplaced loyalty. I mean, I'm not going to buy Melissa Etheridge or the Indigo Girls, their music is so dreary.
So, Tegan & Sara were about to be consigned to the same bucket, i.e. worthy but ultimately boring lesbian bands. But I kept listening occasionally to a couple of tracks, 'The Con' and 'Nineteen', then one or two more, 'Soil, Soil', 'Hop A Plane'. By now I simply ignore the few with the irritatingly tinny vocals, i.e. 'I Was Married', 'Knife Going In', and 'Burn Your life Down'. And I focus on the others, those tracks with intense, driven melodies, and the mellower ones such as 'Call It Off' and 'Floorplan'. Worth the time.
