Little Gem second crop
The lettuce ‘Little Gem Pearl’ (Lactuca sativa ‘Little Gem Pearl’) has provided the ingredients for a number of salads, and rather than re-sow seeds in my limited space I tried a method I’d read about. Instead of pulling up the lettuce plant, roots and all, cut it off about an inch, or an inch and a half, from the soil. Sure enough, within a week or two the plant resprouted and I’m in my way to getting a second crop of leaves.

Tomato update
Two things have combined to make it not a great summer for the tomatoes, firstly my imminent house move and secondly the rubbish wet summer we’re having.
With a house move having been on the cards since the beginning of June there was little point in setting up the irrigation system and planting the tomatoes in growbags. Instead I just left them in their confined 5 and 7 inch pots and fed weekly with tomato food.
The SuperSweet 100 plants seem to have been hit slightly by blight, some of their leaves turned purple/brown and crisped up. The Ildi and Green Sausage were unaffected.
However, SS 100 are starting to ripen first, I spotted an orange fruit on Wed, and Pat in work, who I gave a plant of each variety to, has reported one ripe SS 100. This evening the single tomato is being transported in his camper van to be viewed by the rest of the family, who’re on hols in East Cork.
